West Point Keller Hospital - WEST POINT, N.Y. -- On Jan. 9, he announced the closure of West Point's Warrior Transition Unit as one of several changes to the Warrior Care and Transition Program (WCTP). These changes include: organizational adjustments to the Warrior Transition Unit (WTU), other WTU disabled and recovering Soldier care in their communities, and changes to transition management.

West Point WTU is a company-level unit under the command of Keller Community Hospital, the military medical center of the Northern Regional Medical Command (NRMC).

The small number of WTU soldiers assigned to West Point was noted during periodic reviews of the WTU force structure and factored into the decision to close the WTU. The Medical Order will put the closure into effect until September 30.

Col. Felicia F. Pehrson, Keller's commanding officer, said the closure of West Point WTU and the reorganization of WCTP will not affect the care of Soldiers assigned to West Point WTU. He added that rescuing Soldiers and their families will remain a priority and they will continue to receive world-class service during the transition.

"Each Soldier's situation is unique," Pehrson said. "As leaders, we will continue to change and judge each situation on its own merits. We take seriously our mission to support these Soldiers in their healing and recovery efforts."

The main reason for the change, according to management, is the decrease in the number of wounded, sick or injured soldiers assigned to WTUs. Over the past 14 months, the number of Soldiers receiving transition care and support has decreased by more than 2,800 due to a reduction in emergency operations.

Warrior Transition Units are the core of the WCTP and provide recovering Soldiers with a standardized system of care that includes the Triad of Care -- a primary care manager, a nursing case manager and a squad leader who support each Soldier. They are organized in the form of line units, platoons, platoons, companies, sometimes platoons and brigades.

As West Point's WTU approaches decommissioning, deployed Soldiers will undergo a Disability Evaluation System or be transferred to a larger WTU to continue their rehabilitation.

Another Northern Regional Medical Command WTU slated for decommissioning is McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., which has 11 active-duty soldiers. At Joint Base Fort Dix is the WTU. All inactive WTUs are assigned fewer than 36 soldiers.
